Our First Egg!

The other day, my friends Anu and Dillon came over to play. Anu and I went into the chicken coop to check for eggs - and - I was SO excited - WE FOUND AN EGG!!

Mommy heard some objections and thought maybe the chickens were crowding Anu too much, but she came back in from getting feed to find instead that Anu and I were arguing over the egg. "Nooooo....It's mine!" I was saying. Mommy convinced me it would be ok to allow Anu to hold the special first egg for a minute too. Then since I got to have the egg, Anu got to feed the chickens their cupfuls of grain.

Later on, Daddy fried up the egg for me. It's yolk was bright orangey colored. That's what happens when the chickens eat lots of good grass and insects. Mmm.... it was good!

So far we've found 3 eggs, but Mommy says soon there will be lots of them each day. I collect them in my special egg basket. That's my job while Mommy gets them fresh scratch grains and water.

August Days

August days, full of blueberry picking and sunflower houses... Helena decided she wanted no breakfast - only to go pick blueberries and eat them. I managed to convince her to drink a few ounces of milk by telling her she couldn't pick until she did. Just imagine how many blueberries it takes to fill a hungry toddler's belly! For an hour and 1/2 she ran between mommy and our friend Susanne, eagerly grazing on blueberries. When we went to pay, I commented to the farmer that she had forgotten to pre-weigh one very important container - the child - and I gave her a few extra dollars to cover the lb that Helena surely had eaten.

Blueberries for Breakfast

Nothing like fresh blueberries with freshly whipped cream for breakfast! All the better as a picnic...

Making Friends

Helena struck up a conversation with a teenager today - thru the porch window and across the street. The teen was at the barn to get the horses ready for a show. First off, Helena asked why one of the horses was wearing something. The conversation proceeded to where the show would be, if they had to drive or fly in an airplane, if the horses had to go on a truck, the gender of the various horses and then their ages. This was all led by Helena.

Next Helena digressed, from age, to when the eldest horse, Harvey, might die telling this poor teen that it would be ok if Harvey died and then how Bunny boy died and how the chickies got eaten by a fox. Mommy came running out as fast as she could lol.

No sooner was I back inside the bathroom washing out some woolens by hand (near the porch) when I heard Helena ask "Why do you have such an ugly house?" Oye!! Mommy and Daddy have commented on what an overgrown ugly monstrosity the house across the street is a few times. Fortunately, this girl didn't live there and fortunately she thought Helena was referring to the barn.

Tying up the Dog - Saint Starbuck

At times we have dubbed the dog "Saint Starbuck" because he's so wonderful with Helena. The two of them have a special bond and the dog has endless patience with her. Only after being pulled around the house by his collar (or worse) and "tied up" and made to drink "tea" for a good hour does he finally go hide. Here are the two of them at play.

On a funny note, (TMI if you don't like gross things) the dog recently had a bit of... um... gas. Helena crawled all over around him saying "I'm trying to figure out where his farts come out."

"Silly" I replied. "They come from his hind end just like yours do" which then prompted some serious sniffing around his tail. LOL Fortunately for her, he seemed to be done.

It was only later that I realized that she probably didn't know where they came from because I don't think she knows that the dog's "farts" are the same as her "toots".

Of Prophets and Prophesies

Helena has deduced that "prophets" are something to eat. After all, they have "prophet-seeds"

However, if you like, she will take the seeds out when preparing your food, and if you don't like prophets at all, she'll take them out entirely.

rolling with laughter here....
