More Fun Pictures
Here are some more kite pictures and some silly one's of Helena and I. When we had our pics taken near a small plane there (which Helena thought was very cool to look into!) the little silly refused to smile. It was funny face all the way no matter how mommy tickled her. :)
Kite
We went to a hot air balloon festival this weekend. When we arrived, there were 100's of kites in the air. So pretty! Daddy bought Helena a kite and I can't tell you how thrilled she was!! Our singing of Mary Poppins "Let's Go Fly a Kite" prompted another 20 min or more of her own kite songs. She sang and danced and jumped with glee. It was soooooooooo cute!

I Love the Things They Say
Helena said to me tonight at dinner "Mommy, you make the bestest food in the world. You the best mommy cooker!"
Then a few minutes later she said to me "Mommy, remember when Aunt Katie and Josh were here? Katie sat there and Josh there and you were there and I was here. There were 3 girls at the table." I was really surprised at the abstract thinking that took to count something not even currently present!
The other day, I told Helena to put her binky away. We are trying to wean her off of it but she's still very attached. Right now it's only for sleeping and soon will only be for nighttime, not naps. She is motivated by the excitement of getting a Winnie the Pooh necklace when she doesn't need her binky anymore. Anyway, she was to go put it on the end table. "I'll carry it over there in my mouth mommy" she told me. LOL

Squash Babies
We finally harvested our winter squash - a big basket full of them. But not all are sitting in that big basket waiting to be made into delectable winter delights. Some have found their way to another basket where they are known as the "squash babies". Helena wraps them up, rocks them, feeds them and puts them to bed in her little basket. Who needs toys?!

First Day of Preschool
Helena started home "preschool" today. Part of our homeschool is doing our morning chores in Spanish. We have a little song we sing about finding the eggs - en Espanol. So this evening Helena had her own song about "Little huevos, little huevos, resting in the nesting boxes" or something to that affect. Very cute! See. she's already learning!
She absolutely loved our little circle time which was full of verse and song about the season. We had a lovely little finger play about a squirrel and another with lots of motions about falling leaves. We recited a verse from Psalms too "The Lord will indeed give what is good and our land will yield it's harvest" Psalm 85:12
She was so sad when circle time was over - until she realized that she could then help me make bread and help can tomatoes. She was happy as could be to wash and/or stem tomatoes for a good hour at my side. I figure part of homeschooling should be learning how to care for a home, so in addition to cooking, Helena started to learn to make a bed this morning too.
Found a delightful little poem about the goldenrod lamps and how they shine when the other flowers are going to sleep - so for our nature walk we set out with a basket to gather nuts (didn't find any) and we looked at the goldenrod and how it shone out brightly while many of the other flowers and plants were beginning to go to sleep. We observed the seeds the flowers make when they go to sleep and talked about how the seeds will sleep in the earth over winter and wake up to be new flowers in the spring. We also checked on our melons, pumpkins (one large one is turning orange finally!) and on our giant yellow backed spider who lives in the compost heap and has laid eggs since our last visit.We also found a cicada shell or some sort of bug shell which we took back to the house for later observation under the magnifying glass. Daddy thought that was gross, but hey, this is the fun of homeschool! We get to see the real thing not just a picture in a book! (Ok, so it is a bit gross).
As day's end nears, we are getting ready for dinner and devotions and a trip to the library to get our squirrel and nut books that we ordered. I love the idea of having a weekly library theme!
So day one - we did lots of music, song, poetry, read stories and visited the library, checked out lots of cool "science" right in the laboratory of God's creation, counted cups while mixing up bread and we learned a bit more Spanish vocabulary. Add to that lots and lots of time for imaginative play and we've had a fun fun day!

A Happy Day!
Daddy found a pile of wooden doll furniture on the side of the road a week ago - all with very cheap price tags. What a happy girl Helena was! She insisted on carrying much of it inside all by herself. The next day, she and mommy made a little "home" in our front entryway (which is never used as an entry). The furniture is nicely aranged with little rag rugs beneath it, Helena's water color paintings and some beautiful children's postcards on the walls and little bud vases of flowers in the windows. Helena was sooooooo immensely proud to have her very own home and promptly invited mommy over. :) Play for most of the week has revolved around this little home. Helena even discovered that she can sit in the desk chair and tho her knees don't fit underneath the desk, she can still use the surface for writing. "I'm making my listes [lists]" she tells me as she uses her new light up fiber optic Pooh Bear pen (special delivery via US Mail, curtesy of Grandpa and Grandma Pam). Now I have little Strawberry Shortcake day calender sheets from 2005 - I mean lists - lying all over my house. :)
